The Mirador del Rio, viewpoint of the river actually provides stunning views of the Isla Graciosa which is so close to Lanzarote that the stretch of water between them is know as the river.
The view point was created by César Manrique from its original design as a gun emplacement created when Spain and the USA were at war over Cuba. However its use as a lookout tower goes back to the use by the Guanches, original island inhabitants during the times when Lanzarote was being invaded by pirates looking for food and even slaves.
You will also be able, if the day is clear to see the smaller islands of Montaña Clara, light coloured mountain, and Alegranza which comes from the word joy. These are part of the Chinijo Archipelago.
In the Mirador del Rio you will be able to get a drink and a bite to eat in the spacious bar/cafe.
