Many tourists go to see the Green Lake at El Golfo and don't bother to take in the village of El Golfo. If you drive into the village there is a car park to your left in front of the Restaurante Siroco. From here you can walk up the hill to see the beach and the Green Lake. The walk is a little steep but well worth it for the views of the village, the lake and the unusual landscape. The lake lies between a pebbly black beach, and a backdrop of the black cliffs that really is spectacular.
On the way up, and through the village you will be able to buy green rocks containing the mineral Olivine, it is this and also algae (Ruppia Maritima) that makes the water the spectacular green colour that it is. Recently the Cabildo (Government of Lanzarote) had to take action to stop the algae dying off!
El Golfo itself a charming fishing village, with an unbelievable number of restaurants, mainly specialising in fish and El Golfo is very popular with those residents in the vicinity especially at weekends.
There is also a small hotel in the village, the Hotelito El Golfo.
